A World Founded By Psychotic Minds

Considering what is happening in America at the moment and throughout history since the colonization of its land by Europeans, the profound takeaway from a Health Psychology course I took is that we went the wrong route in medicine in its conception. Seeing humans as just biomedical rather than complex biopsychosocial beings took many early scientists and doctors down a destructive path, creating centuries of trauma for us as a species. I think of Josef Mengele, who from 1943 to 1944 performed experiments on almost 1,500 sets of imprisoned twins at Auschwitz (Walker, 2015). When we dig deep into early male scientists' and physicians’ minds, I see a sociopathic, even psychopathic tendency to get to understanding rather than a humanistic one. Most of these scientists and some who followed lacked empathy for the people they used as guinea pigs and then created a slogan of “It’s all in the name of science.” A justification for brutality used throughout history to start wars and other atrocities in the name of God. When analyzing, one can’t help to see the world’s foundation is built on some varying form of sociopathic and psychotic behavior by those in power. Though many believe science is above religion, I think they both have much atonement to do for the atrocities created in their wake.
