Breaking Down Hegemonic Media: Depicting Diversity in Acts of Kindness
In the intricate web of media, hegemony subtly weaves its threads, perpetuating narratives that not only shape societal perceptions but also reinforce power structures. One of the most insidious ways in which hegemony operates is through the portrayal of ethnicity, subtly reinforcing divisions among different ethnic groups. Even in seemingly innocuous content, such as advertisements for helping the homeless, hegemonic influences are at play, often portraying a skewed image of altruism and assistance.
Take, for instance, the common scenario depicted in many advertisements: a white person helping another white person. While on the surface, this may appear benign, it reflects a deeper, more pervasive propaganda technique aimed at reinforcing existing power dynamics.
